A hernia is an organ protrusion through the tissue or muscle that normally contains it. When the intestine pushes through a weak area in the abdominal wall, the condition occurs most frequently. An inguinal hernia is the most frequent type of abdominal wall hernia. Inguinal hernias arise when the intestine protrudes through one of two channels in the lower abdominal wall known as inguinal canals. Femoral hernias occur in deeper channels termed femoral canals in the upper thigh/outer groin area. They are significantly less prevalent than inguinal hernias and occur far more frequently in women than in men. They also pose a greater risk of problems if not repaired. A obvious lump or protrusion, as well as potential discomfort or pain, is a common symptom of most hernias. The lump or bulge may not always be present; it may disappear when you lie down, for example. When you stand, strain, or lift large objects, your symptoms may worsen. A doctor can diagnose most hernias through a physical exam, although imaging may be required in some cases.
